Recreational Activities for more than 2000 Displaced Children in Gaza

Through Emergency Response Program, a series of summer recreational activities reaching around 2,200 displaced children in Khan Younis and Deir Al-Balah has been implemented to provide children with safe spaces to play, participate, and interact amid the difficult humanitarian conditions affecting children and their families across the Gaza Strip.

The activities were carried out from mid-July to mid-August across seven temporary learning spaces. They included recreational games, sports, arts and creative activities, as well as group activities designed to meet children’s different ages and needs.

The activities form part of SOS Children’s Villages Palestine’s response to the growing needs of displaced children. The activities provide children with regular opportunities for play, recreation, and interaction with their peers, helping them express themselves and regain some sense of everyday life that has been disrupted by displacement and the ongoing humanitarian crisis.

Lina, a nine-year-old participant, shared her experience after participating in one of the recreational activities: “I loved taking part in the activity near the sea. It was my favorite place and the best day I’ve had this year.”

Group and creative activities provide children with opportunities to interact and play away from the tension and pressures of hard daily life. They also allow children to spend time with their peers in a safer environment, while encouraging their participation and ability to express themselves through play and different activities.

Through the Emergency Response Program, SOS Children’s Villages Palestine continues to provide support and protection services to children and families affected by the war in the Gaza Strip. The response focuses on addressing children’s essential needs and promoting their psychosocial well-being, while also creating opportunities for learning, play, and safe activities.
